These Variations have their roots in a 12-note series. But this does not mean that it is not tonally based. 'Variations' consist of qualities presented by the said tone-row, in full, or in part, together with a tonal accompaniment. Sometimes the series is just a guide to modulation. Nevertheless the music still remains basically tonal.
